Everett composting odor could generate electricity

EVERETT, Wash. -- Cedar Grove Composting, a target of many odor complaints over the past couple of years, wants to turn some of that stink power into green power.

The company applied this month for permits with the city of Everett to build an anaerobic digester, and eventually as many as seven, at its Smith Island plant to convert methane gas to electricity.

One $16 million digester could generate enough power for 1,200 homes, while seven could create enough for up to 8,400, the company said. The power would be sold to the Snohomish County Public Utility District.
