EU researchers looking at biogas potential

EU-funded researchers are looking to determine which technologies and regulatory frameworks are best suited for widespread but sustainable biogas production in Europe as part of an effort to meet renewable energy pledges, the European Commission has said.

The European Union support for the 2.6 million-euro Sustainable and Innovative European Biogas Environment, or SEBE, project comes from the EU Central Program, which is financed by the European Regional Development Fund, or ERDF.

Biogas is one of the most versatile energy carriers and can be used for generating electricity, heat and cooling purposes. At the same time, it is also a potential vehicle fuel and can be upgraded to bio-methane for a national gas grid.
