Obama launches effort to develop jet fuel from plants

As part of its push to promote renewable energy, the Obama administration is launching efforts to develop biofuel, including jet fuel made from crop residues.
"By producing more biofuels in America, we will create jobs, combat global warming, replace our dependence on foreign oil and build a stronger foundation for the 21st-century economy," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Thursday at the National Press Club as he unveiled the measures.

Vilsack announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture's five-year agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration to develop jet fuel made from forest and crop residues and other "green" feedstocks.
The commercial aviation industry welcomed the news. "Through test flights with a number of our customers, we have proven that fuels made from plant matter and algae can power jet aircraft safely and efficiently," Bill Glover, a Boeing vice president told Agence France-Presse.
