Edmonton-based Himark BioGas, which designed and built its first
bio-gas plant near Vegreville, has signed a deal worth $15 million with
Western Plains Energy of Oakley, Kan.
The U.S. facility already
produces ethanol from grain and corn. It will add Himark's patented
Waste-to-Energy system to produce ethanol from manure from local
feedlots, as well as food and human waste.
"This is our first
licence, and the plant will be the largest on-farm biogas producer,
representing 10 per cent of total U.S. production," said Evan Chrapko,
the co-chief executive of Himark, formerly Highmark Renewables.
About
half the $15 million is for a licence payment, with the rest for
additional engineering and design that will be done by Himark to adapt
the unit to the Kansas plant. The Himark digester at the Western Plains
plant will initially have a capacity of 24 million litres per year.

Potawatomi biogas plant zoning gains early approval
The Forest County Potawatomi Community’s planned new biogas facility
near its Menomonee Valley casino gained unanimous approval from a city
zoning committee on Tuesday.
The 2 megawatt plant would convert waste products from food production companies to gas and then burn the gas to produce electricity. Heat from the process will heat the casino, and the electricity from the plant will be sold to We Energies.

Portrait 2010 des matières résiduelles de l'agglomération montréalaise
MONTRÉAL, le 8 déc. 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - La Ville de Montréal rend public
aujourd'hui le Portrait des matières résiduelles de l'agglomération montréalaise 2010. Le présent portrait regroupe les données de 2006 à 2010, autant pour
les matières faisant l'objet de programmes de récupération que celles
dirigées vers l'élimination.
En moyenne, chaque Montréalais a généré 534 kg de matières résiduelles
au cours de l'année 2010. Ceci correspond à une quantité totale de
1 008 552 tonnes de matières, dont 37 % ont été récupérées par le biais
des différents programmes offerts par la Ville, ce qui représente une
hausse de 13 % par rapport à 2006.
Faits saillants du Portrait 2010
La hausse des matières récupérées est principalement due à la valorisation d'une quantité beaucoup plus importante de résidus de construction, rénovation et démolition résidentiels et des encombrants. Effectivement, les quantités valorisées sont en hausse de 87 % par rapport à 2006 et le taux de récupération est de 59 %. Ces résidus sont désormais envoyés dans un centre de récupération et de tri plutôt que directement à l'enfouissement. Il s'agit de l'un des principaux engagements pris par l'administration municipale dans le cadre de son Plan de gestion des matières résiduelles (www.ville.montreal.qc.ca/pdgmr). Les quantités de résidus domestiques dangereux collectées ont aussi augmenté depuis 2006; le taux de récupération est de 56 %.

Bien que les quantités de matières recyclables collectées soient en
hausse, le taux de récupération demeure stable, soit de 53 %. La
distribution récente de quelque 250 000 bacs roulant pour le recyclage
à travers la ville aura certes un impact positif sur le taux de
récupération au cours des prochaines années.
Par ailleurs, les quantités de matières organiques ramassées sont en
hausse de 53 % par rapport à 2006. La Ville accentue ses efforts pour
offrir la collecte des matières organiques à davantage de citoyens
d'année en année, ce qui contribuera à augmenter le taux de
récupération, qui était de 10 % en 2010.

Waste to Energy Inquiry in Worcestershire
A public inquiry into the planned 200,000 tonne 'EnviRecover' waste to energy facility that will treat residual waste in Worcestershire is due to commence.
Worcestershire County Council approved plans for Mercia Waste Management's facility near Hartlebury in March. However, the site is on green belt land and was called in by the secretary of state for communities and local government, Eric Pickles to be the subject of a public inquiry.
According to the company its proposed plant is of an appropriate size to treat all the residual collected in Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and will generate around 15.5 MW of electricity.
The facility will also have the potential to supply heat to local businesses and the company said that the 40,000 tonnes of ash that it expects the plant to produce each year will be reprocessed for use as an aggregate.
For the purposes of the inquiry, the company has supplemented its original Environmental Statement with an assessment of the likely significant environmental effects of a heat off-take connection, as well as an update on potential effects of the scheme on Great Crested Newts.

A Biogas Friendly Bill
Since the Public Utility Regulatory Act was passed in 1978, power
utilities have been required to pay an “avoided cost” rate to certain
types of small power production, cogeneration facilities and other types
of qualifying facilities. That rate is typically the cost of the
cheapest type of energy the utility has in its portfolio—usually
coal—and that’s a price with which small renewable energy providers
cannot compete.
More than 20 years later, PURPA is doing something it was never intended for—limiting individual states’ ability to make their own decisions about incentivizing small distributed renewable energy. A new bill introduced in the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee, however, could change that.
PURPA Plus, which is intended to encourage distributed generation of renewable energy, would remove the avoided cost restriction and let states set their own prices, according to Patrick Serfass, executive director of the American Biogas Council. In many cases, PURPA makes small renewable energy generation unfeasible.

Team biogas.se Takes Home Gold and Silver in 2011 STCC
“This win is proof of the project’s success,” said Kristoffersson as he lifted the heavy trophy, following an outstanding season of biomethane-powered performance at the top level of touring car motorsport. The project, involving E.ON, Volkswagen and Team biogas.se, commenced with the first race of the 2009 season.
Last year, Team biogas.se just missed the gold. This season, Fredrik Ekblom and Patrik Olsson stood on the podium throughout the season, demonstrating the consistent performances of the VW Motorsport Scirocco GT 24s. Ekblom finished second and third in the two final heats of the season, while Olsson finished fourth and fifth. Those finishes gave the points needed for Team biogas.se to overtake Volvo Polestar in the team rankings.
“It’s fantastic. This win is well-deserved for everyone in the team,” said Ekblom. “Every team member put in the time and energy that was needed to take us the whole way.”

British Gas and Bio Group in £5m power plant joint venture
The scheme is a joint venture between British Gas and renewable energy developer Bio Group.
It will take food waste from local restaurants, takeaways, hotels and offices and process it to produce biomethane gas.
The plant will be on a former landfill site in Ashton Road and will be able to power up to 1,400 homes when it becomes operational next April, diverting 250,000 tonnes of food from landfill a year.
Some of that waste will come from British Gas offices in the region.
Steve Sharratt, chief executive of Cambridgeshire-based Bio Group, said: “This facility has been designed using our ground-breaking technology as the next stage of a national roll-out of anaerobic digestion plants.
“It will make a real make a real difference to the future use of renewable gas across Greater Manchester.”
