Small Scale Anaerobic Digestion to Boost Biogas Markets

Small scale, distributed anaerobic digestion plants could offer an environmentally and economically stable solution for locally produced biogas.

In Germany government incentives have led to the development of over 6000 anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities, generating twice as much power as all of the country's waste to energy facilities combined.

However many of these are large scale, 1 MW plus facilities, and the proliferation of such plants has affected both tipping fees for food waste - which have fallen from between Eur 60 to 80 per tonne down to Eur 10 to 20 per tonne - and biocrop prices to such an extent as to put many at risk of becoming economically unviable.

In a study published Thursday in the peer-reviewed journal Science, researchers described how they incubated bags of switchgrass inside cow rumens and from that found 27,755 "candidate genes" with the potential for efficiently breaking down plant cellulose into usable sugar that can then become ethanol.

C'est la rivière Romaine que l'on sacrifie cette fois, parce qu'Hydro-Québec doit continuer de renflouer les coffres de l'État, parce qu'elle doit garder son titre officiel de vache à lait des Québécois. "C'est dans cette optique que l'on a créé Hydro-Québec, rappelle Roy Dupuis, et si le projet de la Romaine nous permettait de continuer à faire des profits, on n'aurait peut-être pas eu le courage de faire notre film."

Le film, c'est Chercher le courant, un documentaire-choc signé Nicolas Boisclair et Alexis de Gheldere auquel a collaboré l'acteur-militant. À l'été 2008, alors qu'approchait la date fatidique du début des travaux sur la rivière Romaine, où l'on s'apprêtait à construire quatre nouveaux barrages, un groupe, dont faisaient partie les coréalisateurs, a descendu la rivière en canot afin d'immortaliser la rivière dans son état sauvage.

Province's new wind turbines starting to crank out power

ST. JOSEPH -- In the coming weeks, 60 huge wind turbines will power the equivalent of 50,000 homes and swell local municipal tax coffers, but the company behind the province's biggest wind farm plans to soon more than double its production in Manitoba.

Mike Garland, chief executive officer of San Francisco-based Pattern Energy, said tough economic times and the U.S. financial crisis caused the St. Joseph Wind Farm project to be downsized.

Pattern once eyed a 300-megawatt wind farm in this community just west of Letellier and clearly visible from Highway 75, but the project was eventually scaled back to its current 138 megawatts. But now that the project is nearly completed and the company has demonstrated "that we do what we say we're going to do," Garland said, Pattern wants to sit down with the province and Manitoba Hydro to talk about the next phase.
"I'd love to start construction (by) the end of 2011," Garland said in an interview during the official opening of the wind farm on Tuesday.

Although not as ambitious as once envisioned, the St. Joseph Wind Farm will be the largest in the province once it is fully operational in mid-March. Only seven of the 60 gigantic turbines, mounted on towers 80 metres high, were running on Tuesday, but the company's local manager Ian Cunningham expects they will now come on stream at the rate of roughly one per day.

A second Manitoba wind farm at St. Leon, which opened five years ago, produces 99 megawatts of power.

Valero joins cellulosic ethanol movement

Valero Energy of San Antonio, operator of four corn-fed ethanol plants in Iowa, joined DuPont last week in moving toward the next-generation of biofuels with an announcement that it will invest in a wood-chip ethanol plant at Knross Township, Mich.

Valero’s announcement of the $50 million investment follows DuPont’s commitment to build a corn stover-fired ethanol plant in either Story or Webster counties in Iowa.



The Michigan plant will used hardwood pulp gathered from nearby forests. DuPont’s plant will use cobs, stalks and leaves raked and gathered immediately after harvest.
