Cairo’s Poor Convert Kitchen Waste Into Fuel Savings

Credit: Cam McGrath/IPSCAIRO, Jun 12 2013 (IPS) - The bio-gas digester on the roof of Hussein Farag’s apartment in one of Cairo’s poorest districts provides a daily supply of cooking gas produced from the kitchen waste his family would otherwise discard in plastic bags or empty into the clogged sewer below his building.
Constructed of two large plastic tubs and mostly recycled materials, the zero-emissions bio-gas unit saves his family about LE 20 (three U.S. dollars) a month in gas bills. And in the ramshackle Darb El-Ahmar district where Farag lives, that works out to nearly a day’s wage.
Farag’s bio-gas digester converts organic waste fed into its 1,000-litre plastic tank into methane gas that can be used to heat water or cook food. Ordinary kitchen waste – everything from food scraps, to stale tea and mouldy bread – is soaked overnight in water to soften, then poured into the tank’s bacteria-rich soup to decompose. A pipe carries the methane gas produced to the family’s kitchen stove.

The snack maker will use the CNG stations for its own fleet of delivery trucks but they also will be open to the public. The Texas fueling station will be in Rosenberg just west of Houston. More fleets are going CNG, such as Dallas-based AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), United Postal Service, Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport because it saves money, has environmental benefits and uses a domestic fuel source.r

Civic body approves waste-to-energy plant

The latest in the series of measures the Coimbatore Corporation has taken to address issues related to waste management is a waste-to-energy plant. The Corporation, by way of a Council resolution, has an in-principle approval to establish a plant at its old dump yard in Kavundampalayam.

Vermont Tech begins work on biogas CHP plant

After seven years of planning, Vermont Technical College has broken ground on an anaerobic digestion project that will generate heat for the campus, and power that will be sold to the grid.
Permitting for the Central Vermont Recovered Biomass Facility, which will accept about one truck load per day of off-campus food waste, began in summer 2012. It is being built near the campus central heating plant, co-located with the farm fields on the main campus, which it will also take in waste from.

The three elements to the project include: Landfill Gas to Energy, Solar PV and Wind. Ecology revises rules for managing organic waste

Organic wasteOLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has revised rules for managing organic wastes - also known as "green waste."
Changes to the rules affect methods for transforming organic material into useable or marketable materials.
Green waste makes up 27 percent of the solid waste put into landfills, according to Ecology officials. Disposal of green waste causes more methane and liquid waste at the landfills. Methane is a greenhouse gas emission and is considered a hazardous substance.

2 Calif. biogas projects awarded more than $4.4 million

The California Energy Commission awarded more than $4.4 million to Blue Line Transfer and Sacramento Municipal Utility District biogas projects. “These awards are helping to support the expansion of alternative fuels and zero-emission vehicles in California,” said Robert Weisenmiller, energy commission chair. “Additionally, the funded projects will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants to protect our environment and improve the health of all Californians.”

Blue Line Transfer received $2.59 million from the CEC for its biogas project, which is currently in the pre-construction phase. BLT will utilize a dry anaerobic digester and a compressed natural gas (CNG) system to fuel five refuse and recycling collection vehicles in South San Francisco, Calif. The anaerobic digester, developed by Zero Waste Energy, will convert 9,000 tons of food and plant waste to biomethane and occupy approximately 6,000 square feet of land. The biomethane is upgraded to meet fuel specifications using a BioCNG system from Cornerstone Engineering before it is pumped into vehicles. The project is expected to produce 56,000 diesel \-equivalent gallons per year of CNG.

Lafayette Consolidated Government is on track to have more than 20 buses fueled by compressed natural gas and on the streets before the end of this year.
On Thursday, LCG officials unveiled two new CNG buses, part of the Lafayette Transit System. They are expected to run routes by the end of this month, bringing the total number of CNG buses in service here to seven.

Wastewater T.P. Biogas Utilization

The City is interested in a sales agreement contract for the sale of WWTP biogas, and this RFP is requesting proposals potentially covering a large spectrum of projects which could range from 1) purchase of the raw biogas at the fence line, at one end of the spectrum,  to 2) cleaning the raw biogas to produce clean biomethane for injection into a natural gas pipeline, at the other end of the spectrum, or 3) any other beneficial proposed projects in between, including proposals combining City biogas with other area biogas sources. The City would also consider proposals including cogeneration of electricity and/or waste heat [utilization by the City].

Nation’s largest biogas plant inaugurated

Plant in Be’er Tuviya will be able to provide electricity equivalent to the consumption needs of more than 6,000 homes.

Local and national government officials in Be’er Tuviya on Monday evening inaugurated Israel’s largest biogas plant, which will produce usable electricity from dairy and chicken farm waste.

In addition to providing a needed supplement of electricity to the region, the new plant will also help address ongoing concerns about water resource contamination issues as well as smells emanating from dairy barns and chicken coops, according to a statement from the Be’er Tuviya Regional Council.

“Apartments are ideal places to set up biogas plants as they will have a network in the form of residents’ association besides a common space to set up these plants,” observes University of Agricultural Sciences-Bangalore Vice-Chancellor K. Narayana Gowda.
This will not only help take care of garbage disposal to a large extent, but also get them returns in the form of either biogas/electricity or manure, says Mr. Gowda.

Rotten tomatoes might actually be responsible for ensuring that Jerusalem’s students have enough classrooms in the coming years.

As the city faces an exponential increase in the cost of trash disposal with the closure of the Abu Dis landfill, it is searching for creative ways to cut down on the amount of trash. A plan to sell recyclable materials to private companies means the boxes of rotten tomatoes at the Mahaneh Yehuda shuk have magically turned from trash into shekels.

Biogas plant for North East after £8m financing

A new biogas energy plant is set to make a major contribution to renewable energy production in the North East.

Emerald Biogas has chosen County Durham to locate its anaerobic digestion facility, which will be capable of producing 1.4MW of electricity per annum from food and farm waste.

A corporate finance and tax team from business advisors UNW advised Emerald on the £8m financing deal for the plant, and a team from Ward Hadaway provided legal advice.

Emerald’s directors and shareholders have a solid track record in farming, waste and recycling.

Brothers Antony and Adam Warren already run a successful family-owned animal by-product, food waste collection and recycling business, John Warren (ABP); and Ian Bainbridge owns a diverse farming, land and resources management and plasterboard recycling business called Agricore.

Rivière-du-Loup - La Société d’économie mixte d’énergie renouvelable de la région de Rivière-du-Loup (SÉMER) annonce aujourd'hui qu'elle construira une usine de transformation des résidus organiques en biocarburant, la première en son genre en Amérique du Nord.

La nouvelle rendue publique jeudi fait suite à l'octroi, par les deux paliers de gouvernement, d'une somme de plus de 15 millions dans un projet évalué à 27,6 M$.

Industrial organic solid waste

Industrial organic solid wastes (slaughterhouses, fruit and vegetable processing plants, etc.) are often hauled out at great cost and are generally disposed in a landfill or at composting site. Hauling out costs are unpredictable and service suppliers are unreliable.

Anaerobic digestion of solid effluent on site is often desirable to stabilise waste management cost and take advantage of the biogas energy utilisation.
